Wines of Germany
German wines have a long tradition and eventful history. Wine and wine-making techniques were brought to Germany by the Romans, who conquered southern regions in about 100B.C. Monasteries began producing their own wine, but when Napoleon carved up the church vineyards in the early 19th century, they were sold to private buyers. Most vineyards are located in the south-west on southern facing slopes, usually around one of the major rivers like the Rhine or Moselle. The variety of Reds from Baden-Wuerttemberg are well known around the world as Baden-Wuerttemberg is Germany's third largest wine producing region. In the fall, the wineries and vintagers invite everyone to wine festivals, walks among the vineyards and in the wine villages.
